How it is taught: Offline and online — your choice
Class format: Offline, at our Dhanmondi center. Grammar is explained in Bangla so nothing is lost, and the practice is in Japanese.
Books & materials: Standard JLPT preparation textbooks plus our own practice sets and past-paper drills. Ask us which books your batch is using before you buy anything.
Certificate: The JLPT certificate is issued by the Japan Foundation and JEES when you pass the exam, not by us — we prepare you for it and help you register. You also get a Discovery course completion certificate.

About this course

N5 is where Japanese starts. You arrive knowing nothing — not a single character — and you leave able to read and write both kana alphabets, introduce yourself, ask for things, and follow a slow conversation about ordinary daily situations. It is the level a Japanese language school expects you to be working towards when you apply, and it is the foundation everything above it is built on, so it is the one level worth doing slowly and properly.

Absolute beginners. Anyone planning to study or work in Japan, and anyone who wants to find out whether they enjoy the language before committing to the whole ladder.

What the course covers

Hiragana

All 46 characters plus the voiced and combined forms, written and read until they are automatic.

Katakana

The second alphabet, and why so much of what you will read in Japan is written in it.

Basic kanji

The first hundred or so characters, taught with their readings and in real words rather than as a list.

Core sentence patterns

The desu / masu forms, the particles wa, ga, wo, ni and de, and question and negative forms.

Everyday vocabulary

Numbers, time, money, family, food, transport, shopping and directions.

Listening and speaking

Short classroom dialogues built on each week's grammar, spoken slowly.

Exam practice

JLPT N5 format practice in the closing weeks, if you plan to sit it.

The exam

N5 in the JLPT's own words is the ability to understand some basic Japanese: to read typical expressions and sentences written in hiragana, katakana and basic kanji, and to follow conversations about topics regularly encountered in daily life and in the classroom, spoken slowly. The JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) is a listening-and-reading test — there is no speaking or writing paper — and it is normally held twice a year, in July and December, with registration closing months before the sitting. We will tell you the current date and the registration deadline, and we help our students register. Ask us before you plan a batch around a particular sitting.

Questions about this course

No. The course is useful on its own, and many students take it to be able to live and work in Japan rather than to collect a certificate. If you do want the exam, tell us early so we can time your batch against a sitting.

These change from batch to batch, so we do not publish them here where they would go stale. Message us on WhatsApp or call the Dhanmondi center and we will tell you the current batch, the timing and the fee the same day.
