- The TOPIK certificate is issued by the Korean government's testing body when you pass, not by us. You also get a Discovery course completion certificate.
About this course
Korean starts with Hangul, and Hangul is the friendliest alphabet you will ever learn — most students can read it aloud within the first week, even before they know what the words mean. From there this course builds the everyday language you need to live in Korea and the ground you need for TOPIK I, the first of the two Korean proficiency tests.

What the course covers

Hangul
Consonants, vowels, syllable blocks and the sound changes that trip beginners.

Basic sentence patterns
Subject and object particles, polite endings, questions and negatives.

Everyday vocabulary
Numbers (both systems), time, money, food, transport and family.

Listening and speaking
Short dialogues built on each week's grammar.
- 05
Exam practice
TOPIK I format practice for students who plan to sit it.
The exam
TOPIK is the Test of Proficiency in Korean. TOPIK I is the beginner test and covers levels 1 and 2, with listening and reading papers only — there is no writing paper at this stage. Test dates and registration deadlines are set by the testing body and change each year; ask us for the current schedule before you plan a batch around a sitting.

It depends on the university and on whether the program is taught in Korean or in English. Bring us your shortlist and we will tell you what each one asks for.
Most students read Hangul aloud within the first week or two. Understanding what you are reading takes the rest of the course.
