Hungary has two doors: the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, and a self-funded place. Most students should be walking towards both at once, because the scholarship has one application window a year and missing it costs twelve months.
What Stipendium Hungaricum covers
- A full tuition exemption at the host university — the part of the package that does the heavy lifting
- A monthly stipend, paid at a rate the Hungarian side sets for each year's call
- A dormitory place, or a contribution toward housing if you arrange your own
- Health insurance cover
Applying costs nothing, which is the main reason to apply even if you rate your own chances low. How many places are open to Bangladeshi students is set for each year's call rather than fixed. The part that catches people out is the nomination: applicants from Bangladesh go through a nomination step on the Bangladesh side, separate from and in addition to the university application, and that is where unprepared files quietly fall out. February or September
There are two intakes. September is the main one, and its application window opens in the late autumn and closes in the spring — with the Stipendium Hungaricum deadline sitting inside that window, well in front of the universities' own cut-off. February is the smaller spring intake, and its window sits earlier in the same academic year.
If you are aiming at the scholarship, your intake is September and your real deadline is the scholarship's, not the university's — and the two are not close together. February is the sensible route for students who are self-funding and do not want to wait most of a year for the next main intake.
The self-funded numbers
- Application fee: around €300, varying by university
- Tuition: approximately €3,000–4,000 per semester, varying by university and program; medicine and dentistry sit above that
- Living: mostly a function of the city — Budapest is the expensive one, and Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs are noticeably cheaper
- Accommodation: a university dormitory is the cheap option and a privately rented room the expensive one, with a wide gap between them
The application fee and tuition above are the ranges we quote students today, and both vary by university and by program. Living and accommodation depend so heavily on the city and on how you choose to live that a printed range would mislead more than it helps — ask us for a realistic monthly figure for the specific city you are looking at.
Documents, and the English question
SSC and HSC certificates and marksheets, your last academic certificate and transcript if applicable, a valid passport, a passport-size photo, and the university's own application documents. IELTS is often not mandatory: many Hungarian universities accept a Medium of Instruction certificate or run their own online English interview instead, though some programs still ask for a test score. Where and how the visa file itself is lodged is set by the Hungarian authorities and can change, so confirm the current route with us before you book travel or fees around it.
During the degree, and after it
Students may work within the limits allowed under Hungarian regulations, and those limits are set by the Hungarian authorities rather than by the university or by us — check the current position before you build a budget on it. Eligible graduates may apply for a residence permit to look for work or start employment, and if they secure a qualifying job they may be able to move to a work-related residence permit under Hungarian immigration rules. The degree is recognized across the EU, and residence in Hungary gives you travel within the Schengen Area.
